National Day of ServiceBy the time you open this article, three community service projects will already be underway by ALCC’s Northern, Southern and Denver Chapters. It’s a day when the ALCC team joins with landscape pros across the country to help neighbors in local communities by installing and restoring landscapes in need.

This year’s projects include two school projects – one at a high school in Windsor and another at a K-8 school in Denver’s Stapleton neighborhood. The third project involves a joint effort with Pikes Peak Habitat for Humanity to install landscapes in Colorado Springs.

The Northern Chapter project is responding to a need voiced by the local high school’s student council which has been wanting to renovate an interior courtyard surrounded by the school building. When the project is complete, the area will be transformed to provide a place for students to socialize, play games or simply enjoy a safe and comfortable outdoor environment.

The Denver Chapter will be renovating existing raised edibles beds to make them wheelchair accessible and planting another 50-ft. diameter raised planter that will be a native and low-water demonstration garden. The edibles garden will be used as an outdoor teaching lab for students and become part of the school’s curriculum for horticulture and teaching students about making healthy lifestyle choices.

In the Southern Chapter, ALCC is partnering with Pikes Peak Habitat for Humanity to install new front yards for two newly built homes. They will be laying new sod and rock, installing sprinkler systems and planting water-wise trees, shrubs and perennials.

In all, more than 60 volunteers from member companies large and small will mobilize to make a difference in their communities. In addition, the projects have been supported by generous donations from vender companies in the form of compost, plants, irrigation components and related landscape supplies. ALCC will publish a complete list of all participating ALCC companies upon completion of this year’s Day of Service projects.
