Attention ALCC Associate members:

At Colorado Green magazine, we are discussing the ways that the landscape industry supports each other during challenging times. We hope to share some resources with landscape contractors on how they can rely on their network to help them be successful.

We know that the supplier community offers more than just products, often including free resources to customers. We invite you to tell us about resources that your company offers beyond your signature products and services that can help landscape contractors succeed. Do you offer classes for CEUs? Online tools? Apps to show techs how to use your irrigation controller? Informational handouts that contractors can give to clients after install to help new trees do well? Do you have marketing expertise and tips to share?

DOL abruptly ends PAID program Email
Written by Colorado Green NOW
Tuesday, February 09, 2021 04:00 AM

The US Department of Labor has closed the Payroll Audit Independent Determination (PAID) Program, effective January 29, 2021 when it was announced. The program ended less than three years from its launch date in 2018.

From the DOL release:

The U.S. Department of Labor today announced that the immediate end of its Payroll Audit Independent Determination program launched by the department’s Wage and Hour Division in 2018. The program allowed employers to self-report federal minimum wage and overtime violations under the Fair Labor Standards Act to avoid litigation, penalties or damages, and prohibited affected workers from taking any private action on the identified violations.

“Workers are entitled to every penny they have earned,” said Wage and Hour Division Principal Deputy Administrator Jessica Looman. “The Payroll Audit Independent Determination program deprived workers of their rights and put employers that play by the rules at a disadvantage. The U.S. Department of Labor will rigorously enforce the law, and we will use all the enforcement tools we have available.”

Noisy yard became a peaceful haven Email

Rocky Mountain Custom Landscapes, Inc. (RMCL) has been working on a clients’ Vail property for eight years. The homeowners originally contracted RMCL’s construction division to build water features on this high-elevation, mountainous site and subsequently hired RMCL to plant and maintain gardens on the property.

“The clients’ goal was to have thick, vibrant gardens full of color to soften the hardscapes of cascading water,” says Lauren Crary, maintenance & gardening account manager at RMCL, who has been managing this site for the past three years. “They also wanted the gardens to blend into the surrounding wildflower areas and have some ornamentals closer to the home.” RMCL uses annuals, perennials and shrubs to create the color and naturalized effect the clients wanted. The homeowners also wanted to harvest organic produce from their yard by growing climate-appropriate edibles.

Written by Colorado Green NOW
Tuesday, February 09, 2021 02:00 AM

As the weather turned and landscape companies prepared for a lucrative high season, COVID-19 sent shockwaves through the market. The halt of many commercial businesses due to stay-at-home orders paired with a sharp decline in consumer confidence induced an economic spiral, and landscape companies were not left unscathed. Pre-pandemic, landscaping services had a promising growth trajectory; now, industry growth is projected to decline by 6.2% in 2020.1

The initial shock faded, and many landscape companies enjoyed a busy, successful summer. However, as the long-term economic impact of the pandemic has yet to be unveiled, business leaders must embrace agility and proactivity to survive and thrive in the aftermath of COVID-19. As business leaders establish initiatives for the coming year, we remind companies that the path to recovery requires reinvention in three key areas: cash, throughput, and people.

Written by Colorado Green NOW
Tuesday, February 09, 2021 01:00 AM

Throughout the pandemic, businesses have become more reliant on the Internet and in technology that allows them to safely connect with employees and customers. Invoicing and payments online, Zoom meetings, and communication platforms like Slack and Microsoft Teams have allowed businesses to continue to operate amid COVID-19 restrictions. But all of this interconnectedness comes with risk. Increased reliance on web-based technology can leave a company vulnerable to fraudsters and hackers. If your company has not conducted a review of its cybersecurity efforts recently, now is the time to act--before the busy season gets underway.
